Post-Surgical Physical Therapy in Portland, Oregon

Safe progression from early recovery toward strength, function, and return to activity.

Post-Surgical Rehabilitation

After surgery, rehabilitation should match your healing stage and your goals.

Post-surgical physical therapy can help restore movement, strength, tolerance, and function after orthopedic procedures. At Nick Rinard Physical Therapy in Portland, we work within your surgeon’s precautions and progress treatment according to healing, symptoms, and the activities you need to regain.

The goal is a clear progression from early recovery toward everyday function, work, exercise, and higher-level activity when appropriate.

What post-operative physical therapy may focus on

The priorities change as healing progresses. Your surgeon’s protocol and precautions always take priority when they apply.

Early mobility

We may work on safe motion, swelling management, walking or assistive-device use, and basic function while respecting surgical restrictions.

Strength and control

As appropriate, rehabilitation progresses toward strength, balance, movement quality, and tolerance for daily tasks.

Return to activity

Later stages can focus on work, exercise, stairs, running, lifting, recreation, or other goals that matter to you.

We follow surgical precautions and medical guidance

Post-operative rehabilitation is different from treating a typical musculoskeletal problem. Weight-bearing restrictions, range-of-motion limits, tissue-healing timelines, and surgeon-specific instructions can affect what is appropriate at each stage.

If your surgeon has provided a protocol or specific restrictions, bring them to your evaluation so your physical therapy plan can be coordinated with that guidance.

Common post-surgical goals

  • Restore safe walking and transfers
  • Improve range of motion within allowed limits
  • Rebuild strength and muscular control
  • Improve balance and confidence with movement
  • Return to stairs and household activity
  • Return to work or physically demanding tasks
  • Resume gym, running, hiking, or recreation
  • Build independence with a home program

Procedures and body regions we may see after surgery

Your individual surgical instructions determine whether and when physical therapy is appropriate.

Hip and knee

Rehabilitation may follow joint replacement, ligament or meniscus procedures, patellar surgery, or other orthopedic operations.

Ankle and lower leg

Rehabilitation may include recovery after fracture fixation or other lower-extremity procedures, with weight-bearing progression based on medical guidance.

From post-op recovery to the activities you care about

Meeting early milestones is only part of recovery. As restrictions decrease and capacity improves, rehabilitation can become more specific to the demands of your life. That may mean walking farther, returning to work, getting back in the gym, hiking, running, or returning to recreational sports.

See our sports and return-to-activity rehabilitation page for more on later-stage progression.

Frequently asked questions

When should I start physical therapy?

Timing depends on the procedure and your surgeon’s instructions. Some patients begin quickly, while others have a period of protection before progressing. Follow the guidance provided by your surgical team.

Should I bring my protocol?

Yes. If your surgeon gave you a rehabilitation protocol, precautions, or weight-bearing instructions, bring them with you so we can follow them closely.

Can I return to the gym or sports?

That depends on the surgery, healing, medical clearance, and your current capacity. Rehabilitation can progressively prepare you for higher-level activity when it is medically appropriate.
